The 6th Edition of Blockchain Developer Monthly!

Happy New Year everyone! Markus here. If you've been here before, you can skip this section. If it's your first time, keep reading.

What's this all about?!

Well there are lots of blockchain newsletters and youtube channels out there that will hype you up on the latest NFT project or predicting some new token that's going to the moon.

Less so in the last few months given most of the "tourists" looking to make a quick buck tend to disappear when prices go down. But the builders are still here and so are you and so is this newsletter.

It's still hard though to find newsletters that actually go deep into things that are relevant for developers working in the space.

That's why I created this - a newsletter dedicated to developers who want to stay up-to-date and excel in the world of web3.

In case you aren't already convinced... Being a solidity, blockchain, & ethereum developer is a fantastic career option.

Regardless of whether you love or hate crypto, there's no denying blockchain is an exciting technology with tons of job opportunities. You can work around the world, you get to work on solutions to big problems, and you're on the cutting edge of the tech sector.

But things move FAST.

So staying up-to-date with the constantly evolving ecosystem can be tough. If you're still reading this, maybe you want to be a top-performing developer within the web3 landscape, but probably don’t have time to find, read, and synthesize all the articles, videos and podcasts that come out each month.

So this monthly Blockchain Developer Newsletter was born.

I keep you up-to-date with what's happening within the web3 industry, without wasting your valuable time, by curating the most important articles, guides, news, resources, podcasts and videos from the past month.

This newsletter was inspired by Andrei's Web Developer Monthly + Python Monthly and Daniel's Machine Learning Monthly.

Ok, let's dive into this issue. I hope you enjoy!

Let's dive in. Here's what you missed in December 2022 as a Blockchain Developer…

New Year, New Us!

First of all: Happy New Years to all you rockstar Blockchain Developers!

I hope you're excited for the new year. Sometimes a little drama can be fun - that's part of being involved with a fast-paced, cutting-edge field - but let’s hope 2023 will have at least a little less drama in the blockchain & crypto world!

SBF Arrested

So you might've heard the news... Sam Bankman-Fried ("SBF"), the founder and now-former CEO of FTX, has been arrested.

Note: if you aren't all caught up on the FTX/SBF/Alameda scandal, be sure to check out my timeline of events in last month's Blockchain Developer Monthly Newsletter.

SBF was arrested on December 13th by the authorities in the Bahamas, then extradited to the US and later released on $250 million bond.

On-chain analysts noticed funds tied to Alameda wallets moving right after his release. This would not be allowed under his bail conditions, but SBF has denied that it's him moving the funds.

So the question is: do you believe him...?

Meanwhile Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda, and Gary Wang, FTX co-founder and former CTO, pled guilty to fraud and are cooperating with authorities.

The plot continues to thicken. We'll see where things are next month!

2023 Solidity Roadmap and Updates

1. 2023 Roadmap for Solidity: The 2023 Roadmap for Solidity updates is now available on GitHub!

In Q1 2023 we can expect:

  • User defined operators/literals;
  • Removal of Stack too Deep errors as blockers to via IR and making them less annoying to users; and
  • Improved performance of the via-IR pipeline.

In Q2 2023, an interesting thing that the roadmap also includes is the first iteration of a structured, concrete design document for generics.

This may also involve defining weaker transitions in the type system, like introducing tuple types as first-citizen types and tying data locations to types instead of variables, and staging those for implementation.

But we'll have to wait until Q4 2023 for a finalized generics design, according to the roadmap.

2. 2023 Solidity Developer Survey: The 2023 Solidity Developer Survey is now live.

Be sure to participate and give your feedback so that Solidity can constantly improve! I'll be sure to discuss the survey results here when they're released, but if you want to see the 2021 survey results you can see them here.

3. New Solidity Tech Lead: Christian Reitweissner a.k.a. @chriseth, has stepped down as the Solidity Tech Lead (though he will be staying on the team just in a smaller role).

He is succeeded by Daniel a.k.a @ekpyron, a long-time Solidity core team member.

Daniel is a mathematician by training but worked as a part-time software developer since his studies and this year received a PhD in Computational Metaphysics.

Best of luck to Daniel! There sure are a lot of smart people in the blockchain world!

2023 Blockchain Events

2022 ended with a bang - in Bangalore, India, to be precise (get it?!) as ETHIndia amassed 20,000 applicants and over 2,000 builders, establishing itself as the biggest Ethereum hackathon. It was held on December 2-4.

But 2023 is going to be an even bigger year for the Blockchain Developer community. I've created a full, updated list of 2023 events, including online and offline hackathons and conferences, just for you here.

If you're thinking about attending some Blockchain events in 2023 (which I highly recommend) and want to get a sense of what these events are like, you can check out the Official Aftermovie for the recent ETHIndia event here.

A couple of the events I'm excited about are:

  • ETHDenver set for Feb 24 - Mar 5. It's one of the largest and longest-running events in the world and is free to attend, but you have to submit an application and be accepted. Submit your application here!
  • ETHGlobal Tokyo is a hackathon set for Apr 14 - 16. Apply to attend here.
  • ETHGlobal New York is another hackathon set for Sept 22 - 24. Apply to attend here.

See you next month!

I hope you enjoyed this edition of Blockchain Developer Monthly.

Something missing? Have an idea of what to include in a future post? Let me know.

See you next month,
Markus
